How to estimate a vinyl fence (cost per linear foot)

Vinyl (PVC) fence is sold as a kit of pre-routed posts and panels, so the estimate is really a count of sections and posts — but the panel width is fixed, which means partial sections and cut panels are where takeoffs go wrong.

Installed range

$30–$60/ft

Typical height

6 ft

Post spacing

8 ft o.c.

The per-linear-foot formula

Vinyl comes in fixed panel widths — usually 6 ft or 8 ft. Sections = ceil(LF ÷ panel width). Round up: a partial section still needs a full panel and a post.

Posts = sections + 1, plus an extra post at each corner and each gate. Posts are routed for line, end, corner, or blank, so order the right SKU per location.

Panels: one per section. Gates replace a section with a gate kit.

Concrete: vinyl posts are larger (5x5) and lighter, so they need a solid footing — typically 2 bags per post; gate posts often get more or an internal stiffener.

  • Sections = ceil(LF ÷ panel width)
  • Posts = sections + 1 + corners + gate posts
  • Order posts by type: line / end / corner / gate
  • Concrete ≈ 2 bags per post

Material checklist

Posts are SKU-specific by routing — miscounting line vs corner posts stalls a job.

  • Pre-routed posts (line, end, corner, gate/blank)
  • Panels (privacy, semi-privacy, or picket)
  • Post caps
  • Gate kits + hardware
  • Internal aluminum stiffeners for gate posts
  • Concrete

Labor considerations

Vinyl installs faster than wood once posts are set because panels slot into routed posts — but everything depends on posts being perfectly spaced and plumb, so layout time is critical.

Cold weather makes PVC brittle; hot weather expands it. Build in expansion gaps and don’t over-torque.

  • Precise post layout (fixed panel width is unforgiving)
  • Gate post reinforcement
  • Racking panels for slopes (limited vs wood)
  • Cutting end panels to fit

What moves the price

Panel style (privacy vs picket), height, and wall thickness/grade of the vinyl drive cost. Cheap thin-wall vinyl fails fast, so reputable contractors price for heavier grades.

vinyl fence FAQ

How much does a vinyl fence cost per linear foot?
Installed vinyl privacy fence generally runs $30–$60 per linear foot. Picket and ranch-rail vinyl styles cost less; heavy-wall privacy with decorative tops costs more.
Why is vinyl fence priced by the section?
Vinyl panels come in fixed widths (commonly 6 or 8 ft), so material is counted in whole sections. Any partial run still consumes a full panel and post, which is why rounding up matters.
